Summer Nights

Silver-laced clouds with swirling tangerine beards and big bulging bellies

nap in vista hammocks that shadow the shore

Snowy plovers playfully  whistle “tur-weet,” chasing a sunbeam’s

golden retreat

Bright little kisses dot the twilight sky and darkness reaches out

as it spies the  awakening moon’s smiling eyes

Straw-colored sea oats snug in their beds

whisper “shh” as the wind shifts and  blows noisily by.

Furry white knuckles tuck into the shore

as pearl-capped waves roar out a mariner’s tale

full of salt and the sea

and blue-green mermaids with confetti-colored shells in their hair
